10 Items or Less - Seasons 1 & 2
When he inherits his father’s family-owned grocery store, Greens & Grains, young Leslie Pool’s (Lehr) hands-on, open communication approach to store management soon alienates him from his misfit employees. Despite Pool’s determination to prove he can do things his own way, chaos ensues, spawning a comedy of errors with a host of quick-witted characters and their outrageous relationships.Imagine The Office plunked down in the middle of your neighborhood Piggly Wiggly. 10 Items or Less brings the improv feel of The Office, as well as the hand-held camera, the deadpan sensibility and the wide variety of workplace absurdities, to a venue known and frequented by all: the supermarket. The talented ensemble cast is first-rate, and includes John Lehr (one of the show’s creators) as the officious and vaguely dim boss of the operation, Leslie. The lovely Kirsten Gronfield, as store manager Leslie, plays down her natural beauty and demonstrates that she has one of the most expressive faces in all of TV comedy. One episode features the sudden appearance on the market’s wall of a dark stain that looks like the face of Jesus. Thus, in Leslie’s not-quite-razor-sharp brain, is a marketing opportunity born: “Come for the miracle, stay for the prices!” proclaims a sign he creates. Meanwhile, an electrical issue has compromised the refrigeration system (”The e.coli is having a beach party back there!” one panicked employee cries), and relationships and power struggles tangle in the background. It’s all jolly good fun, though some of the food situations can be a bit stomach-turning. Interestingly, the show chooses not to do much actual product placement, though it obviously could. One episode takes place in the laundry soap aisle, and the bottles and boxes are labeled things like “Cheeh” and “Tride.” The boxed set includes all 13 episodes from seasons one and two, as well as a behind-the-scenes featurette, some cast info, and a pretty hilarious blooper reel (not for the little ones). Cleanup on aisle five! –A.T. Hurley
